AN extension of time allowed for a temporary marquee to be used as a mosque in Skipton is being recommended for approval.

The marquee, originally put up while building work took place on a new mosque in Midland Street, was only supposed to be in use until February.

But it has remained in place on council-owned land off Greenfield Street while building work continues.

An application for temporary use until the end of August is being recommended for approval by Craven District Council's planning committee when it meets on Monday.

Councillors will hear that the marquee is used for prayers four times a day, with the first at around 3.30am and the last at around 11pm. Each session lasts for about 20 minutes and is attended by around 15 people.

Two letters of objection have been received by the council, complaining about noise and disturbance, and suggesting that the former Pennine Motors garage be used as an alternative.
