NORTH Yorkshire County Council is the first authority in the country to adopt the Troubled Families model for children and young people’s services.

Formed out of existing children and youth services, the new service supports families in a more joined-up way, with workers able to stay alongside a child and their family, be they newborn or aged up to 19.

The model is based on the use of a dedicated key worker who works flexibly to challenge and support families to turn their lives around.

North Yorkshire was tasked with turning around 845 families by April 2015 and has achieved positive outcomes, making the county one of the most successful authorities nationally.

“This is about getting help at the earliest opportunity” said county councillor Janet Sanderson, North Yorkshire’s executive member for the children and young people’s service. “North Yorkshire is England’s largest rural county and isolation can be a real issue for families.

“Other authorities are showing an interest in these ground-breaking proposals because like us they need to find new and radical ways of delivering effective services with utmost efficiency.”
