SKIPTON Food Bank and the town's Swadford Centre have each received a cash boost of £1,200 thanks to the recent car show.

Thousands of people turned out to see a variety of classic, vintage and just interesting cars and motorbikes on the closed High Street in the event organised by self-confessed petrol head Jason Smith.

Plans are already under way to stage a second show next year.

Lucy Irven, food bank manager, said all at the food bank and Skipton Baptist Church were very grateful for the support.

The Food Bank gave out 725 food parcels last year and continues to provide generous food parcels to families and single people in need in Skipton and Craven," she said.

Food parcels are distributed via support agencies such as the Citizens' Advice Bureau, Foundation Housing, Probation Services, North Yorkshire Horizons, North Yorkshire Social Services and the children's centres.

The food bank has just been awarded a second year of funding by Craven District Council as part of its Community Grants scheme.

"To help ensure our food support reaches those who need it across the area, we are in the process of establishing satellite distribution points in Sutton-in-Craven, Settle, Ingleton and Grassington and links are being made with agencies and support services across the region," said Lucy, who added they were always grateful for donations.

Caren Lee, manager of the Swadford Centre, said they were hugely grateful for the donation.

The centre, an invaluable meeting place for anyone over 50, is looking for more volunteers and a new chairman.

Originally set up as a rest centre, it is now a place where people can go to meet up for a drink, something to eat and for a chat.

It also offers its meeting rooms for community use.

Jason, a great supporter of the centre, said: "I hope when I reach the age that I am able to go this place is still in operation as I think I would be very happy while away a few hours a week there."

Manorlands Hospice also received more than £1,600 from the event, taking the total donated to charities to more than an impressive £4,000.
