CONONLEY WI will celebrate a hundred years of the Women's Institute at a special event later this year.

The Cononley group, which started up in 1958, meets once a month at the village institute and participates in regular events, trips and other activities.

Cononley WI recently took part in the village gala and members got into the spirit of things by dressing in green to follow the gala's Going Green theme.

It is the WI's centenary year on a national level and Cononley WI will celebrate the occasion with a cream tea on Saturday, September 19, in the village institute. It will take place from 2pm to 4pm.

A number of other activities associated with the centenary are to be organised by Cononley WI.

Member Carolyn Scarr said: "The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities."

Anyone interested in joining Cononley WI should ring secretary Elizabeth Calvert on 01535 634240 or visit the group's Facebook page.
