OTLEY AC's Jamil Parapia secured second place in the Run For All Leeds 10k finishing just 20 seconds off the top spot.

He finished in 31min 53sec, with co-runner Zack Whitehead coming eighth in 34:04. Also for Otley were Nicola Lee in 45:37 and Eriks Zvaigzne in 47:14.

The race winner was Kevin Loundes (Manx Harriers) in 31:33 and the first lady in 53rd place was Leila Armoush (Charnwood AC) in 36:59.

Schoolteacher Jamil said: "With summer holidays on the horizon and a chance to relax, the Run For All Leeds 10k represents (for teachers) a well-timed race to finish the year.

"Zack, Nicky Lee and I decided to enter again with the prime goal of lowering our times from last year and I'm pleased to say that we did by 28 seconds, 3:46 and 1:26 respectively.

"The course is similar to the Abbey Dash albeit with a few more corners and some imaginative detours to make the distance 10k.

He added: "Sadly and for reasons I can't explain the Leeds 10k doesn't attract the same depth of quality as the Abbey Dash.

"Perhaps it is more to do with tradition or the fact that actually Leeds city centre in the summer is not the best place to race. Nevertheless, the support along the route was incredible."

Meanwhile, Phil Robinson took part in the La Santa Mini-Dualthlon, in Lanzarote, an event involving a 2.5k run, 15k bike leg including a 5k climb up to Tinajo, then back to the start for repeat the 2.5k run.

Phil said: "From first visiting Club La Santa in 1998 I've done this event 16 times solo, plus twice as part of a team of two; and his time I recorded 58:03.

"The club's owners are Danish, and since the Danish school holidays have started already there were loads of blond-haired teenagers, and one of them, whose age was given as under-14, took third place in behind two serious triathletes more than nine quicker than me."

The Leeds 10k saw a record turnout of Airecentre Pacers at a single event , many of whom were debutants and therefore recorded personal bests , encouraged and coached home by the club’s established members .
