A PUBLIC forum regarding the proposed construction of 39 houses in Embsay attracted more than 60 villagers.

The controversial proposal by the Chatsworth Settlement Trustees seeks outline planning permission for 39 homes in Shires Lane.

Embsay with Eastby Parish Council, which called the meeting, listened to villagers' concerns and has drawn up its own objections to the plans.

Chairman, Cllr Brian Shuttleworth, said the number of new houses exceeded Embsay's allocation in Craven District Council's draft Local Development Plan, and villagers are also concerned about traffic congestion, increased demands on school places and the effect on neighbouring Embsay Cricket Club.

"There's more than 20 cars parking nose-to-tail on one side of Shires Lane making it a one-lane road," said Cllr Shuttleworth. "It's like that now – goodness knows what it'll be like with an additional 39 houses."

He added: "A lot of the villagers, especially those with young children, are concerned as the school is at maximum capacity. There will be a lot of houses for young families and the demands on school places will be higher. There are already some children being sent to school in Skipton."

He said the parish council is particularly concerned increased costs in insurance premiums for provision of protective netting could impair the financial viability of Embsay Cricket Club to a point where it could no longer be sustainable.

The consultation has been extended until next August 6.
