ORGANISERS of one of the area's most traditional and popular agricultural shows are putting the finishing touches to the event.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale Show takes place on Saturday, September 5, as usual in the village school and the field next to it. Closing date for entries in the various classes is next Tuesday, August 18.

And this year's event features classes for sheep, crafts, horticulture, confectionery, photographs, eggs, vintage tractors, vintage cars and children’s handiwork.

The various classes of competition were originally confined to residents of the Horton parish, though that rule was relaxed a few years ago, and the show now attracts interest from a wide area.

The sheep breed competitions are traditionally among the most eagerly anticipated, and entries for the classic Swaledale and Dalesbred, both open and local, have increased in recent years.

This year's open sheep classes include Texel, Zwartbles, Blue-Faced Leicester and Rare Breed.

Popular too have been the vintage tractor and car classes, which are again open to everyone, with entries taken on the day. Exhibits need to be on the show field by 10am.

Also open to all are the dogs and pets classes, with entries taken on the day, and judging is at 2pm.

The school will be open on Saturday for exhibits to be left from 8am, and refreshments will be served all day by the Friends of Horton School.

Schedules and entry forms are available from show secretary Paula Swainson, Little Barn, Studfold, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Settle, North Yorkshire, BD24 0ER, telephone 01729 860435.
