AN ADDINGHAM man has joined a team of 30 Macmillan supporters in a bid to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Prolific fundraiser Nick Hodgson embarked on the trip last week and was due to reach the summit yesterday.

The 53-year-old said: "We will be sleeping in tents for most of the trek and ascending through different climactic zones, culminating in the snow and ice at the summit.

"This is the latest annual trek I have done to raise funds for Macmillan. Last year I walked up to 19,000 feet in the Indian Himalayas and before that the Inca Trail in Peru and the Great Wall of China."

Before he left Nick thanked all the businesses and organisations who have helped him raise money, especially those who contributed raffle and auction prizes for an event at Addingham's Memorial Hall, which raised £1,700 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The event, organised by Nick, saw local band Chill Pill and magician Willie Macgregor entertain the audience, who were then treated to a supper of pie and peas with delicious pork pies from Wilkinsons of Ilkley, washed down by wines from Martinez and beer from Ilkley Brewery.

Nick added: "Macmillan do an amazing job and need all they help they can get."
