A BOOK about Wharfedale Rugby Club is being launched at its Threshfield ground this weekend.

Riverball, written by Ilkley author Simon Ravens, explores how a small village club on a shoestring budget continues to defy the odds of the modern professional game.

From the moment he first walked up The Avenue at Threshfield to see Wharfedale play, Simon has been wanting to tell people about this rugby phenomenon.

“The locals all seemed to take it for granted, but I was amazed," said Simon. "The question I asked myself was how a small Dales village has produced a club that plays in English rugby’s National League One?"

The public launch of Riverball is this Saturday at Wharfedale’s home match against Darlington Mowden Park.

Simon will be signing and talking about the book in the clubhouse before and after the 3pm match.

Riverball is priced at £16.99 and available from The Grove Bookshop in Ilkley and Addingham Newsagents.
