COMPUTING students are heading to France to learn about Information and Communication Technology (ICT) uses in a variety of settings.

More than 40 pupils from The Skipton Academy will study computing in action on a trip to Disney Studios, EuroDisney and Paris from October 18 to 22.

Al Metcalfe, assistant head of faculty for maths, computing, science and business, said: “The five-day trip is primarily based on computing but also encompasses a range of other subjects.

“Students have a 50-page coursework booklet to complete. They will go behind the scenes at Disney Studios, including seeing how technology is used to create movies and special effects. They will learn how computing helps operate and control the safety and queues on rides at EuroDisney, plus study customer service applications.”

The group will also tour the sights of Paris and visit a chocolate manufacturer, looking at how computers contribute to managing the making of large amounts of confectionery.

Principal Wendy Hamilton said: “This trip is a fantastic opportunity to see how computing is used at the cutting edge in business and service settings. Of course, being in Paris brings the added bonus of seeing important cultural, architectural and art treasures – not to mention the valuable exposure to the French language all around them.”

The trip includes students from years seven to 11 and first chance was given to the digital leaders – young people in each age group who take on responsibility in computing.
