YEAR two pupil Alfie Bracewell has become Bentham Community Primary School's first maths star.
He was chosen unanimously by all the teaching staff after he showed he could work both mentally and with concrete objects to calculate, reason and problem-solve with numbers.
Helen Jarvis, the school's maths champion, said: "I was delighted to present Alfie with this award. Not only is he a mental maths star, he is also a very polite boy who deserves this special accolade".
Alfie was crowned on Friday and received a crown, rosette and cup. He also selected a dinosaur toy as his special prize.
Headteacher Catherine Boocock said: "We hope to select and reward a maths star every week. We have a big focus on mental maths this year and the 'maths star' competition is just one small part of it."
