A DOCTOR who admitted the assault by beating of his wife in Carleton has been given a community sentence by Skipton magistrates.

Andrew James McAllister, 55, was ordered to complete a 30-day rehabilitation requirement and to address psychological, anger and relationship issues.

McAllister, who had already admitted to assaulting his wife at their home in West View on September 9, had an earlier caution for assaulting his wife in 2011, the court heard on Friday.

His wife had made it clear she had not wanted their 30-year relationship to end, but that she wanted him to acknowledge the hurt he had caused, said prosecutor Martin Butterworth.

She had also declined to complete a victim's statement and had not wanted a restraining order, he added.

In mitigation, John Mewies said McAllister's behaviour was a direct result of unsuccessful brain surgery he had 20 years ago to help his epilepsy.

On September 9, he had returned home after being removed the day before by police and had followed his wife to her 'place of sanctuary' in the attic where he had pinned her against a wall.

Mr Mewies added there was willingness on both sides for the marriage to continue.

McAllister will also have to pay criminal courts costs of £150, prosecution costs of £85 and a £60 surcharge.
