THE SKIPTON Academy is teaming up with Skipton Brass Band and primary schools for a musical start to the festive season.

Students will join the town’s brass band and choirs from Water Street and Greatwood primary schools for the concert at the Academy on Wednesday.

Principal, Wendy Hamilton, said: “We are delighted to be involved with Skipton Brass’s concert, which promises to be a great evening of musical entertainment.

"It is a great way for students to get involved in musical activities with the wider community.”

The band, which can trace its roots back to the 1870s, will open the show. Each school will perform a number of items before the audience is invited to join in a mass singing of a carol, accompanied by the band, for the finale.

Skipton Brass secretary, Sarah Paul, said: “We want to strengthen our links with the community, which we have been a part of for so long, and to encourage young musicians.”

Skipton Brass, which is supported by the Skipton Town Partnership, has a gateway band designed for learners and those picking up their instruments after a break from playing. It meets at The Skipton Academy on Mondays at 6pm, ahead of the main band practice.

Students will again welcome the band in celebrating Christmas with a traditional service of carols and lessons at Holy Trinity Parish Church at 7.30pm on December 14.

Head boy and girl – Rob Harker and Shelby Lawson – will lead a team of readers and Skipton Brass will provide the accompaniment. As in previous years, performing arts students will use the event for part of their BTEC qualification.

Mrs Hamilton added: “We are looking forward to our carol service and wishing everyone a very happy and peaceful Christmas.”

The concert evening on Wednesday starts with refreshments from 6.30pm ahead of the 7pm start. Admission is free.
