A GARGRAVE man who crashed his car on his way home from Leeds was more than twice over the drink drive limit, heard Skipton magistrates.

Benjamin Guy, 25, of Church Street, was waiting in his car when police found him on the A65 at around midnight on November 8, the court heard.

His car had come off the road, was stationary on the grass verge and Guy was uninjured.

He provided a positive roadside breath test and was taken to the police station where he was found to have 76 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

He told police at the time he had been to Leeds and had lost control of his car because of adverse weather conditions.

Guy, who admitted drink-driving, told the court he had spent the night in custody and had time to consider what he had done.

"I reflected on what I had done and it was unacceptable. I am extremely sorry, I risked my own safety and most importantly, other people. I am ashamed of myself," he said.

He was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £120, and ordered to pay costs of £85, criminal courts charge of £150, and surcharge of £20. If he completes a drink drivers rehabilitation course, his ban will be reduced by 18 weeks.
