LANGCLIFFE Singers will travel to Gargrave for their Christmas concert this year.

The performance will take place in St Andrew's Church next Saturday, December 5, at 7.30pm under the baton of musical director Nigel Waugh.

The concert will feature two works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who is considered to be one of the most important composers of the 20th century.

He succeeded at reviving British music during a career that spanned over six decades and his music is notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness, representing, perhaps, the essence of ‘Englishness’. He died in 1958.

The Singers will perform Fantasia on Christmas Carols, for which the bass soloist will be choir member Richard Williams and there will be cello accompaniment by young local cellist Owain Smith.

Sixteen-year-old Owain - who has played with Settle Orchestra and is a pupil at Giggleswick School - will also perform Kol Nidrei by Max Bruch.

The other Vaughan Williams' work is the cantata, Hodie (This Day), which was composed between 1953 and 1954 and was the composer's last major choral-orchestral composition, being premiered at Worcester Cathedral, as part of the Three Choirs Festival, on September 8, 1954.

It will be performed by soloists from the Royal Northern College of Music and the Langcliffe Singers will be augmented by members of Skipton Music Centre Choir.

Organist will be Paul Fisher, of Langcliffe, who is also a renowned composer.

Tickets are priced at £10 and are available from Cave and Crag, Bentham Post Office, Skipton Camera Centre and on the door.

The mixed-voice choir is always delighted to welcome new members. There are no auditions and previous singing experience, although helpful, is not essential.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at 7.30pm at St John's Hall, Settle. For more information, visit langcliffesingers.org.uk or ring Mr Waugh on 01729 825807.
