THE 1st Embsay Brownies have been thinking about the refugees in Calais, Greece and Dunkirk as part of World Thinking Day.

They have launched their own fundraising campaign, which has involved making a video and writing to various officials including Prime Minister David Cameron, MP Julian Smith, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Skipton mayor Gordon Bell and Skipton Building Society chief executive David Cutter.

Victoria Alderson, one of the four pack leaders, said: "We are very proud of the Brownies' commitment to their "Promise" by doing a good turn everyday and putting others first. We hope their campaign motivates lots of other guide groups and organisations to help.

"This campaign is primarily aimed at helping the refugees. However, as leaders we can see how empowered the children feel running this fundraiser giving them a sense of independence, self esteem and using their power as a group to make a difference."

The Brownies have researched the essential items that are vital to make a difference to the lives of refugees. These include men's shoes (size 7-8), tents, sleeping bags, socks, candles, dictionary, torches, cooking utensils, trousers (waist size 28"to 32"), baby wipes, children's picture books, blankets, toys, underwear, gloves, hats, chocolate and waterproof jackets.

Donations can be taken to the collection point at Embsay Methodist Hall on Wednesday between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. The items will then be taken to Yorkshire Aid in Leeds and transported to Greece, Calais and Dunkirk.
