AN iconic print by North Yorkshire artist Alister Colley, which celebrates the Tour de France in Yorkshire, has been donated to Craven Museum and Gallery.

Mr Colley, who was born in Harrogate and has a studio in Pateley Bridge, was named as the official artist of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014.

He produced an official painting along with 2,014 limited edition prints of his work to celebrate the event, and one of these prints is now going on display in Skipton.

The picture reflects Yorkshire’s rolling landscapes full of cyclists pedalling past a backdrop of some of the county’s key landmarks, and was produced by blending acrylic paint with chalk and oil based pastels.

The landscape features 28 Yorkshire locations including Ribblehead Viaduct.

Mr Colley said: “This was the first official Grand Depart picture – the Tour de France had never had an official artist before. I suggested that we might donate this print to Craven District Council as a memento of the occasion. The response to the event in Yorkshire was overwhelming. I think they’d be foolish not to hold the Tour here again. Now we’ve got the Tour de Yorkshire here too which wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the Tour de France.”

Martin Wills, manager at Craven Museum, said: “We’re delighted that Mr Colley has presented us with this print. The Tour de France was a very special event in the history of Craven and it’s fitting that it should be remembered and celebrated in the museum. This is a fascinating picture full of detail and well worth a closer look.”
