YOUNGSTERS from nine primary schools joined children from Giggleswick Junior School for The Johnny Walker Sports Festival.

Johnny, who died in January 2013, aged 44, was well-known across Yorkshire for his prowess in both Rugby League and Union. He spent his working life at Giggleswick School, rising to the heights of properties manager.

The festival was originally based around tag rugby, but this year included netball for both boys and girls.

More than 60 children took part in a netball coaching clinic led by Yorkshire Jets players Sophie Halpin and Maria Lutua, and a further 80 youngsters took part in a tag rugby workshop, delivered by sports leaders from Settle College with support from the rugby development officers of the RFU.

Emphasis in the afternoon was placed on game play, with a total of 26 teams taking part in netball and tag rugby tournaments, and more than 200 boys and girls were involved in a series of pool games leading to play-offs and finals.

The under-nine event was won by Ingleton Primary School, with Settle Primary School A runners-up and a combined Giggleswick Junior and Settle Primary School team in third.

Settle Primary School A were winners in a very closely contested under-11 competition. A mixed team from Horton and Rathmell Primary Schools claimed second place and Giggleswick Junior School’s A team came third.

In the netball tournament, boys and girls enjoyed the opportunity to play a number of games and experience playing in different positions.

Giggleswick Junior School A and B finished first and second respectively, followed by Bentham and Settle in joint third place.

The event also raised money for two worthy charities – the Ananda Marga Orphanage in Mombasa, Kenya, and Kwezana School in South Africa.

Bentham, Clapham, Giggleswick, Giggleswick Junior School, Hellifield, Horton, Ingleton, Long Preston, Rathmell and Settle primary schools all took part in the festival, with coaches from the Rugby Football Union and North Ribblesdale Rugby Club working alongside the Yorkshire Jets to ensure a great experience for the pupils.

Mark Turnbull, headteacher at Giggleswick School, said: "There was some great rugby and netball played with a lot of talented players showcasing their skills.

"It was great to see so many young people enjoying the games. Many thanks go to all those involved in the day, as it was a genuine community effort, and to the whole Walker family for supporting this important and now very popular event in memory of Johnny."
