THE Castle Inn at Skipton will host a display of traditional May Day celebrations on Sunday from 1pm.

Singers, dancers, musicians and mummers will come together to show off a selection of acts which will capture the joyful spirit of May.

May Day singers and musicians will perform carols, which are rarely heard, as well as Thomas Morley’s madrigal, Now is the Month of Maying.

Cononley Morris, a new and growing Morris side, will perform dances in the Cotswold tradition, using sticks and hankies to emphasise the flowing movements of the dance.

Penny Plain Theatre Company and guests will engage and amuse the audience with their usual rambunctious antics.

Finally the current Lancashire and Cheshire Clog Dancing Champion, Carrie Davies, will demonstrate a selection of Lancashire clog dances.

Further performances will take place at the Skipton Castle entrance at 2.45pm and outside the Town Hall at 3.30pm.

The company will then retire to The Castle Inn to rejoice at the passing of winter, the coming of summer, and the chance to enjoy another year of England’s vigorous and flourishing folk traditions.
