FAMOUS musicians were on display during the Bank Holiday weekend as villagers followed a Top of the Pops theme for this year's Cononley Scarecrow Festival.

"Once again, Cononley villagers have made some fantastic scarecrows for visitors to enjoy," said Julian Brown, organiser and chairman of the Cononley Village Institute.

"It's been a pop-tastic and great family event," he added. "Cononley has paid homage to pop icons, who have passed this year."

Scarecrows in the likes of music legends David Bowie and Prince, plus TV starVictoria Wood, were amongst the 55 different entries dotted around the village.

The winning scarecrow, as voted by villagers and festival visitors, was a 'Back to the 80s' entry by the Gregory family, who displayed famous singers Adam Ant, Boy George, Elton John and Madonna in the garden at Cononley Hall B&B.

Second place was 'Uptown Funk by Alvin & the CroftMunks', an entry in West Lane designed by the Timbers family.

The Spencer family won the third place with their tribute to Prince. The 'Purple Pixie of Pop' was on display at Aireside Terrace.

The Secret Drawer sponsored the first, second and third place prizes of £25, £15 and £10, as well as the festival programmes, while Oakhouse Foods sponsored the duck race prizes.

The event raised £1,600, which will be split between Cononley Village Institute and the Children's Heart Surgery Fund, a charity based at Leeds General Infirmary.
