SKIPTON Civic Society has released a new leaflet that traces the history of the town in Fifty-Four Buildings.

It provides a timeline, from the construction of a timber castle in 1090 through to the erection of the new Albion Place development in 2014, which replaced the old clinic building at 9 High Street,

A map shows where all the buildings are located, along with details and a photograph of each.

Civic Society joint chairman Sue Wrathmell said: "We have included a variety of examples of dated buildings from the hundreds in the town. The station, auction mart, offices, houses, shops, schools, and churches all are closely dated, many from a datestone which people can look for themselves, and we have added our research about the architect as well as other details.

"By bringing these buildings together, with an introduction and a map, we hope that the reader can see how the town has developed as a unique and very special place."

The society will give a copy of the leaflet to each building mentioned and to educational establishments and linked societies, as well as selling them.

It has also reprinted its popular leaflet from 2009, Ginnels and Yards, and both publications are available, at £1 each, from Skipton Tourist Information Centre inside the Town Hall, from the shop in Skipton Castle and from Skipton Library.
