OFFICERS from the Environment Agency say they have detected no pollution following an incident where dozens of fish ended up dead in the River Aire at Cononley Bridge.

They first responded to reports of the incident at 7.30pm on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the agency said the officers had found no signs of pollution, but would continue to monitor the area.

Commenting yesterday he said: "We were told on Wednesday evening about crayfish seen to be in distress in the river.

"When we responded we found about 50 dead trout, along with a number of dead minnows.

"We believe this might have been down to atmospheric conditions.
"When there are thunderstorms atmospheric conditions change, and this causes the oxygen levels in the water to dip.

"So the lack of oxygen in the water is likely to have caused the deaths."
