A COMMEMORATIVE cricket match between Settle and Skipton took place at Marshfield on Sunday, celebrating a match between soldiers from the two towns which took place on the Western Front in 1915.
It honoured those who fought and died in the First World War and brought together several descendants and relatives of the original Settle players.
They were: John and Jamie Morphet, Henry, Michael and Peter Stevens and Matthew Atkinson (great nephews of Jack Morphet); Chris Weston (grandson of Nicholas Geldard); and Michael Cardus (grandson of John Cardus).
The original players all served in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. Lt (later Col) Geldard DSO MC and Pte Cardus were wounded in battle and L/Cpl Jack Morphet, one of Settle’s greatest players, was killed.
Skipton avenged their defeat of 101 years ago, beating Settle by 30 runs. The game was played in great spirit despite the light drizzle. A display about the original match and players was mounted in the clubhouse by The Folly, which co-ordinated the event and, in the best of traditions, Settle WI provided a tea for the players.
