A BARNOLDSWICK high school is due to honour a former pupil who died while serving his country in Afghanistan.

West Craven High School will unveil a commemorative plaque at 4pm today in honour of Earby soldier Jordan Bancroft, who lost his life in a gun battle in Afghanistan on August 21, 2010.

Lance Corporal Bancroft, 25, was serving in the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment when he was killed while on duty in Sayedebad, central Helmand, protecting a meeting between peacekeeping troops and Afghan elders.

The former West Craven Technology College pupil joined the Army, aged 16, in September 2001 and served for nine years.

In a tribute to L/Cpl Bancroft after his death, his commanding officer, Lt Col Frazer Lawrence, said: "He was one of the biggest characters within the Regiment – an exceptional soldier and a very talented junior non-commissioned officer.

"He was loyal, brave, compassionate and honest.

"The Battalion has lost one of its finest – a true 'Lion of England' and he will never be forgotten."

The school has invited L/Cpl Bancroft's family and friends to the ceremony.
