SOME of the district's older residents enjoyed a scenic drive in the Yorkshire Dales courtesy of Ilkley and District Good Neighbours.

Started seven years ago, the scheme allows people who can't access the countryside independently anymore to still get out to enjoy the landscapes they love.

The latest trips saw 30 participants enjoy two afternoon drives to the Yorkshire Dales, followed by afternoon tea at Bolton Abbey Cavendish Pavilion Cafe. The annual excursions are free for guests and are funded by personal donations and grants from various organisations, including The Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

“Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” said excursion organiser and trustee of Ilkley and District Good Neighbours, Anita Dunford. “I think it’s so important to keep them all in touch with the beautiful Yorkshire countryside where many of the residents have walked, picnicked with their families, or in some cases actually worked there in years gone by."

The area had a very special and personal connection for one person on the trip. Ivan Gilbey, 86, lived and farmed on the Bolton Abbey Estate for more than 60 years and has many happy memories of working and living there. Now based in Addingham, Ivan looks forward to these journeys, where he can once more see the place where he spent much of his life.
