THE family of a 20-year-old Skipton man who was found dead in May have stepped up their campaign to raise awareness of the devastation that mental health problems can cause.

A petition started by the siblings of Samuel Carroll, who had "suffered in silence" following the 2014 death of his father Steven, has already been signed by around 4,500 people - and Skipton MP Julian Smith has pledged to support the campaign "in any way I can," after meeting members of the family.

'Samuel's Rainbow' needs 10,000 signatures to be put before Parliament. It calls for greater awareness of the dangers of depression, especially in young men who can often be reluctant to talk about their problems.

Samuel's five brothers and sisters, including his twin brother Steven, have organised a fundraising night on Wednesday at The Venue in Skipton, which will feature London-based reggae singer Natty and a variety of other entertainment.

His sister Hayley Carroll has spoken of how the family was devastated by the loss of Samuel, who was found dead in woodland in May.

She said: "Our brother was a lively and bubbly personality and we didn't really realise how low he had become after our father died. Obviously the whole family was devastated but Samuel didn't really speak about it.

"We started the petition so that something positive can hopefully come from his death. The response to Samuel's Rainbow has been fantastic and we are getting towards half of the signatures needed. No one should have to suffer in silence."

Julian Smith has said on his Facebook page: " I recently listened to Hayley and her sister and grandmother tell me about the 'Samuel's Rainbow' petition...The experience they are going through shows just how important this campaign's message is, and I pledge to support them in any way I can."

The Venue evening will feature reggae hit-maker Natty - who has been backing the campaign since reading about it on Facebook - on stage at about 5.30pm. Most of the 100 tickets available have been sold, though there are still a few left at £10 each, Hayley said.

The event will also feature an auction, with a glove signed by boxing legend Frank Bruno, who has also offered his support to the campaign, and jewellery, plus a raffle.

Hayley added: "Some super raffle prizes have been donated by Skipton firms and we'd like to thank them all for their support. It promises to be great night."

Tickets are available via the Facebook pages for Hayley Carroll and Samuel's Rainbow.
