WHITE Scar Cave at Ingleton was open again today after overnight flooding on Sunday night hit the area.

The longest show cave in the country was forced to close for the day on Monday after heavy overnight rain forced water through the system, causing a mini-waterfall out of the visitor entrance and down the steps.

The B6255, next to the visitor centre, was also flooded and passable only with care.

North Yorkshire County Council said heavy rain had hit the area, with standing water on a number of roads.

White Scar Cave includes the 90m (295ft) long Battlefield Cavern, which is one of the longest cave chambers in Britain.

Tracie Pilkington, from the cave, said they were open as usual today from 10am, and were very busy, perhaps with people having seen footage of the flooding on social media.

"It wasn't expected at all, but once the rain had stopped, the water does quickly subside and we are open as usual today," she said.

Flash flooding hit other parts of Craven, with fields off the A59 between Skipton and Broughton under water on Monday night and into this morning.

Craven Country Ride at Coniston Cold was closed today after what owner, David Coates, described as a 'deluge of rain'.

"The course needs all of today to recover, and we will hopefully be open tomorrow," he said.

Mr Coates advised anyone planning to visit the course to telephone before leaving home.
