AROUND 10,000 people have enjoyed a taste of the seaside at Barnoldswick's Olympic themed beach party.

Over the last month, thousands have flocked to the town square for its increasingly popular annual transformation into a beach cove.

Many tonnes of imported sand, a surf simulator and even donkey days have all gone into making the event - which finishes tomorrow - into a popular success.

Councillor David Whipp said a backdrop to the beach included murals aimed at transporting visitors to all sorts of exotic locations.

"It’s been a tiring, but very satisfying few weeks on Barnoldswick Beach," he said.

"With a few days to go before the final day of Barnoldswick Beach on Friday, the town’s top temporary tourist destination has attracted around 10,000 visitors during August, with well over 2,000 individual children being registered as beach users."

Cllr Whipp said around half of all visitors were from outside the immediate area, with many families coming to enjoy all the fun of the seaside.

"For many, it’s a first time visit to Barnoldswick, while for other families visiting the beach has become a firm favourite of the summer holidays, with repeat visits at other times of the year as well."

Organised by Barnoldswick Town Council, the beach is set up and run by volunteers.

All the activities are free, but with visitors asked to donate towards running costs.

So far, more than £2,500 has been handed over by grateful beach goers.

Thursday's beach activities will feature donkey rides, while there will be Punch and Judy shows on the final day, tomorrow.

Friday will also see the final duck races, with prizes donated by Barnoldswick businesses.

All proceeds will go towards the staging of the beach.

Cllr Whipp added: "I’d like to thank the town council for once again backing Barnoldswick Beach, all the volunteers who have given selflessly of their time to make it happen, all the local organisations and businesses who’ve helped put the event on and especially all the children and visitors who help make our beach such a special place each August."
