PROPOSALS to build a 'gambrel', two sided roof to a bungalow in Raikes Road, Skipton have been turned down.

Members of Craven District Council's planning committee agreed with officers that the proposals to increase bedroom space would detract from the overall character and appearance of the single storey building.

Monday's meeting was told by planning agent, Robert Hodgkiss that the scheme for Glen Croft was fundamentally different from an earlier, refused plan and urged councillors to approve it, or to visit the site before making a decision.

But planning officer Neville Watson said the bungalow was one of a cluster of three and that the gambrel roof was not typical at all of the area, or even in this part of the world.

Cllr John Dawson thought a site visit would not help because the application varied little from the previous, refused one.

An earlier application to extend the property was refused by the council in April and also dismissed on appeal to the Planning Inspectorate in July.
