Skipton Library will be hosting a spooky storytelling experience as part of the Love to Read campaign which gets underway next Monday.

The promotion, in conjunction with the BBC, is designed to rekindle or inspire afresh a love of books and reading in young and old.

Tales from the Book of Darkness and Light is a new storytelling experience that can be seen at Skipton Library on Friday November 4.

Combining Gothic stories written and read by Adam Z Robinson, with a haunting musical score composed and performed by Ben Styles, the event takes place at 7.30 pm.

It is part of a series of displays and events starting on Monday  and culminating in the #LovetoRead weekend on 5 November. There will be lots of spooky stories across the county and North Yorkshire’s young Reading Hacks have been given free rein to organise their own activities to get children excited about books.

The libraries would like to know what people’s favourite books are and who are their favourite authors, so visit a library to take part in the poll or vote online on the #LovetoRead page on the Society of Chief librarians website at www.goscl.com/lovetoread/

People can call in to any library in the county on 5 November and showcase some of their favourites with a ‘shelfie’ (a library selfie). Hold up a board recommending a favourite book, pick a face that shows how it makes you feel, take a selfie and share it at #Libraries #LovetoRead

Chris Metcalfe, North Yorkshire County Council Executive member for Libraries and Customer Services, said: “A love of reading offers so many things. It inspires, provides comfort, stimulates, relieves stress, educates, aids concentration and if you borrow books from your library, provides free entertainment.

‘‘Reading is still one of the nation’s favourite pastimes and it’s great that libraries are teaming up with the BBC to celebrate it. If you aren’t a library member, now is a great time to join and reap the benefits of reading.”
