THE KNITTING Nanas are really clicking with children from a South Craven primary school.
Knitting Nanas is a group that brings together residents of the Sunnybank sheltered housing complex and pupils of Glusburn Community Primary School.
The children and pensioners meet each Monday after school in the lounge of the Anchor-run complex in Glusburn.
School head Richard Hunt said: “Learning to knit is fun, creative and benefits children in a variety of ways, including not just those which are curriculum based.”
He said the skills included improving fine motor coordination, reading instructions, making calculations and problem solving.
Other benefits include ‘life lessons’ – teaching children responsibility, the importance of focus and concentration, following a process, perseverance and teamwork.
Mr Hunt added: “As the children are participating with residents of Sunnybank, they are also promoting positive links between the school and the community, sharing stories about their day and all benefiting from the relationships and mutual respect which has been interwoven through the club.”
The children have begun by making blankets for their dolls.
