WORK on a new Aldi supermarket store for Barnoldswick is due to get underway.

Following the granting of full planning permission for the Albert Hartley site in Crownest Road, off Skipton Road, Aldi says the new store will be open towards the end of next year.

The 1,735 square metre store will include parking for 120 cars, will be larger than the store in Colne and provide jobs for 40 people.

An Aldi spokesman said: “We are pleased to have been granted planning permission for a new Aldi store on the Albert Hartley site in Barnoldswick. The store will be larger than our existing store in nearby Colne and will create around 40 jobs when fully operational. We expect the store to open late next year.”

Plans for the store were approved by the West Craven Area Committee of Pendle Council in August, but a decision notice has just been issued.

Councillors at the meeting heard a retail impact assessment had been undertaken by the applicants which had concluded there would be no impact on shops in the town centre.

The assessment was however opposed by a representative of The Co-op, which has a store in the centre of Barnoldswick, which believed it would have a significant impact.

Barnoldswick councillor David Whipp, said: "I very much welcome the start on development and hope all goes to plan."
