PAST and present students of Upper Wharfdale School gathered in Grassington Town Hall to celebrate achievements over the last year.

Guest of honour at the school's presentation evening was Mark Arthur, chief executive of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, who spoke about how important hard work and resilience was to achieve goals, and the ability to bounce back from potential defeat.

The school's headteacher Andrew Taylor thanked the staff for their commitment in both teaching expertise and their organisation of wider opportunities for the students, including visits to Wales, London, France, Poland, Italy, Belfast and Iceland.

Diana Chambers, vice chairman of governors, highlighted the continuous improvement of the school and her pride in being involved over the years.

The Threshfield school is currently listed in the top four per cent in the country for progress and in the top ten per cent for attainment.

Last year students, who operate in a selective system, achieved an average of half a grade higher than their counterparts nationally.

In addition to being rewarded for academic achievements, students were rewarded for their leadership, sporting and musical contributions to the school.
