Kathleen Burgess
ONE of the oldest Craven residents, Kathleen Burgess, died on January 16, her 105th birthday.
Mrs Burgess, who was a resident at Anchor’s Townend Close care home in Cross Hills, began her working career as a shorthand typist.
When World War Two broke out in 1939 she enlisted with the Women's Auxiliary Force, the women's wing of the RAF.
And when peace was declared in 1945, she joined the Women's Land Army working to help feed the nation.
Her husband, the Reverend Guthrie Burgess, was the Methodist Minister at Cowling and then at Hipperholme before retiring to Glusburn.
She said at the time of her 100th birthday: "My grandparents and parents all lived to a good age. I've had a wonderful life."
