SMOKE alarms alerted the occupants of a Skipton business to a fire on Saturday, say firefighters.

Two fire crews from Skipton and one from Grassington attended the fire at the bed and breakfast in Devonshire Place at just after 5pm.

It is believed the fire started in a consumer unit in the front room, causing damage to the unit and to the room itself.

Jeff Richardson, based at Skipton, said fire could be seen coming from the front of the property when they arrived, but properly fitted and working smoke alarms had meant the occupants had been alerted in good time.

"We could hear the smoke alarms had been activated when we arrived. It is important that people remember to check their smoke alarms once a week, and landlords are required by law to have alarms fitted on every floor."
