Church Fellowship: The next meeting of the Austwick Church Afternoon Fellowship is on Wednesday at 1.30pm in the Parish Hall. Speakers are Pat and Liz Wherity who will do a presentation on the Kasin School Project in Nepal. All welcome

Women’s Institute: There was much laughter when members of Austwick WI surprised President Elizabeth Booth and her team with ‘Death by Chocolate’, a murder mystery evening set in Paris. A cast of nine likely suspects enacted the drama before, after, and between courses of a delicious meal of coq au vin followed by chocolate brownies and ice cream. So convincing was the acting and storyline, that only one member of the audience identified the true murderer! There will be a walk and lunch on Thursday, February 23 - meet at church at 10am. The Guest Speaker on March 9 will be Caroline Eames, who will talk about ‘The Work of a Forensic Scientist, and the meeting is open to family and friends.

Barnoldswick

St Andrew’s: There will be no toddlers group tomorrow, but the Bible study group be meeting at 7.30pm at Woodlands. The Rev Norman Cumming will be the preacher for the 10.30am Communion service on Sunday. The Rev Keith Richardson will be the preacher at the 6pm Sunday service. On Monday, the prayer hour will be held from 10am and on Thursday, February 23, the church council meeting will take place at 7.30pm.

Bolton Abbey

Priory Church: The regular Sunday services are Communion (said) at 8am, 10.30am Sung Eucharist and Evening Prayer is at 4.30pm. On the first Sunday of the month there is the Liquid Family Service at 9.15am. This is a fun service for all the family with songs, prayers and activities. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. On Saturday, February 25 in Bolton Abbey Village Hall, the Priory Guides and Welcomers will hold their annual meeting at 10am for coffee, with the meeting starting at 10.30am. The Bolton Abbey WI will hold their meeting in the Village Hall on Thursday, February 21, at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Women’s Institute: The next meeting of Bradley WI will be held on Monday, commencing at 7pm in the village hall, when there will be a fun evening of line dancing. Please wear sensible shoes.

School News: Cracoe class paid a visit to Tesco’s last week, where they shopped and scanned items through the checkout and sampled cheese and fruit. They also shaped their own bread, which was then baked in time for pupils to bring back to school. There will be a Friends coffee morning on Wednesday March 1. The school is collecting Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers again this year and there is a box outside the hall to put in any vouchers.

Parish Council: The next meeting of the Parish Council will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday in the village hall. The council is trying to organise a Speed Watch in the village with the assistance of North Yorkshire Police, who will train those who take part in the use of the equipment and recording. Village Challenge: The first round of matches have now been completed in the Inter Village University Challenge and the first semi-final will be between Skyreholme, who beat Thorpe, and Appletreewick, who vanquished Hartlington. The second semi-final will be between St Wilfrid’s Parish, who squeezed past Barden in a closely contested match, and Burnsall who, after a close match, beat Hebden. The semis take place on February 24, starting at 7.30pm at the Red Lion.

Carleton

Film Night: The film shown at Carleton Village Hall on Saturday is Bridget Jones’s Baby. £4 on the door, 7 for 7.30pm. Please note that there is less room than normal due to the pantomime stage being up, so the tables probably won’t be up.

Panto Run: Carleton Pantomime will run from Wednesday to Saturday, February 22-25 February at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2pm. This year’s production is Cinderella. Tickets costing £6/£4 are available from The Swan Inn and Carleton Post Office.

Monday Club: On Monday the club meets in The Swan Inn dining room at 7.30pm. Maggie Tookey will talk about working for EDA on the Syrian/Lebanese border.

Bags 2 School: The recent Bags 2 School collection held by Clapham School raised £148 for school funds. This will go towards purchasing equipment such as playtime toys, outdoor adventure equipment and much more. A big ‘thanks’ go to all those involved and all those who kindly donated.

Millennium Trust: Clapham residents may be interested in two projects being run by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. ‘Meadow Links’ will help local groups create wild flower areas that support threatened wildlife such as bumblebees. Tonight, Thursday, Tanya St Pierre will give an illustrated talk about the project in the Village Hall starting at 7pm. There will be a discussion about the possibility of creating some wildlife areas in public spaces, gardens or verges in the village. The talk has been arranged by the Clapham Sustainability Group, entry is free and all are welcome. The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust is also running Stories in Stone. a programme of conservation and community projects in the Ingleborough area. Part of the programme is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and involves organising training courses in conservation skills such as using a scythe to mow small areas of wild flower grassland and lawns. The course will be held on Friday, July 21, and take place on a farm near Chapel-le-Dale; places are limited and the cost is just £15, contact Hannah Rose, the Stories in Stone administrator, on 015242 51002.

Church Dates: The St James’ Church coffee morning in the Village Hall in January was so popular that they ran out of space and future coffee mornings will need to use the main hall. These are planned for the early part of the year, with the next on Saturday, March 11, 10am-noon. There will be the coffee, tea, cakes and raffle etc as well as bacon butties. Grand Auction: Bradford Pothole Club’s Grand Auction is in the Reading Rooms, Clapham, tomorrow Friday, starting at 7.30pm. All proceeds will be used to enhance facilities of the Shree Indreni Primary School in Nepal. To donate items for the auction, just take them along.

Coniston Cold

St Peter’s: On Sunday at 9.30am there will be a Holy Communion with the next in the series on Jesus’s vision and values.

Young Farmers: Coniston Cold Young Farmers held their Annual Advisory and Show meeting last week. The forthcoming annual show is on August 12 at Coniston Cold hall and the adjoining field. Joint show secretaries Robin Schofield and Joe Hudson listened to all suggestions from the meeting and will go away and arrange everything, Future meetings include pancake night, dry slope skiing at Rossendale, 10-pin bowling at Skipton and a coffee morning at Hellifield Village Institute on March 4 at 10am.

Cononley

Musical Review: Cononley came up trumps again yesterday in the sixth incarnation of the annual Musical Mayhem event showcasing the musical talent abundant in the village. Children and beginner adults played and sang in the afternoon; through the evening musical mayhem reigned non-stop, with about 20 separate performances throughout the evening. The Cononley Singers, the Cononley Morris Dancers, individuals and groups provided a huge variety of entertainment to the near capacity audience. Thanks to everyone who came, performed, ran the refreshments, set up, cleared up and created such a fab community spirit.

Scarecrow Festival: The next big event in the Cononley social calendar is the Scarecrow Festival on May Bank Holiday, April 29, to Monday, May 1. The theme is ‘Comics and Cartoons’.

St John’s Church On Saturday10.30am- 12.30pm, there will be a Coffee Morning in Cononley Institute with the usual bacon butties, cake, book and bric-a-brac stalls together with tombola and raffle. On Sunday, Morning Worship will be at 11am, led by the Rev Marcus Pattern. During Lent, the church will be open 2.30-3.30pm each Sunday for quiet prayer and reflection.

Cowling

History Society: Earby and District Local History Society will meet at 7.30pm on Tuesday in the New Road Community Centre, Earby. The event will feature Going Going Gone, a slide show of some of Earby’s lost buildings, plus a talk on Earby’s Billiards Hall. The talks will be preceded by the annual general meeting. Visitors and new members welcome.

Earby Gardeners: The Earby and District Gardeners Society will hold its Spring Bulb, Coffee and Plant Sale morning from 10am to noon on Saturday, March 18. Everyone is invited to grow a bowl of any kind of flowering spring bulbs (bowl not to exceed ten inches in diameter) for exhibition. All visitors will be invited to judge and a cup will be presented for the bowl with the most votes. There will be a raffle, a prize a time stall and spring bedding plants to buy.

Churches Together: The next open mic night will be held at the White Lion, Riley Street, Earby, from 8.30 pm on Friday, February 24. All performers are welcome to just turn up and book a slot with Rev Norman Cumming. The same day will see New Road Community Centre hosting the ministers’ meeting at 1pm in the lounge.

St Peter’s: Mark Clegg will lead the 10.30am service on Sunday. At 4pm there will a Songs of Praise service followed by tea. There will be an exercise class at 1.30pm on Monday, but there will not be an exercise class on February 27 or March 6. The church council takes place at 7pm on Wednesday.

Embsay-with-Eastby

Bingo Night: Embsay Cricket Club’s next bingo night in the Village Hall is on Saturday. Doors open at 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.30pm. The maximum cost would be £10 if you run six tickets and all proceeds go towards the club’s finances. The club’s annual meeting will be held on Thursday, February 23, at the Cavendish Arms with a 7.30pm start. The meeting will be followed by a pie and peas supper. New and old players welcome at the meeting.

Hall Committee: The next meeting of the Village Hall Committee will be on Monday, February 20, at 7pm in the supper room at the hall. Any body or group interested in hiring the hall and unsure of procedures and costs can contact any one of the following committee members: Ann Rawson Roberta, Cowley or Shona Watson. The Village Hall Committee always meets on the third Monday of the month unless otherwise stated.

Churches Events: Sunday’s Methodist Chapel service will be led by Jane Jolly and the service at St Mary’s church will be a family communion service at 9.30am. Coffee, tea, juice, biscuits will be served after the service. Next Tuesday there will be a quiet communion service at 10.30am. On Friday there will be a ‘Smiley Faces’, or toddler praise, session held 1.45pm-3.15 pm. This is for pre-school children and parents, grandparents and carers. Lots of toys, craft, a Bible story, singing, juice, tea, coffee and time to chat.

Fairtrade Invite: Embsay-with-Eastby Fairtrade extend an invitation to visit the pop-up shop in the foyer of the Village Hall on Saturday, February 25, 10.30am-12.30pm. There will be Fairtrade food and gifts to buy, stories of farmers benefitting from Fairtrade and display of information. A Fairtrade breakfast is on Tuesday, February 28, 8.4-10.45am in the Methodist Chapel Hall. There will be pancakes with a range of fillings, muesli, granola, fruit, all local or Fairtrade produce. There will also be Fairtrade food and gifts to buy; donations appreciated.

50s Forum: This month’s ‘50s Forum’ in the Village Hall will be on Thursday, February 23, 2-3.30pm, when Charlotte Foster, the co-ordinator for Embsay-with-Eastby Good Neighbours, will be the speaker. Embsay Juniors: Embsay Juniors footballers are newly kitted out thanks to support from Kingsway Veterinary Group Ltd. Youngsters playing for Embsay Juniors FC U12 team in the Craven, Aire and Wharfe Junior league,are being sponsored this season by Skipton’s veterinary practice, Kingsway Vets, who have donated training tops.

St Andrew’s: On Sunday there will be a service of Holy Communion at 8.15am (in the Parish Rooms) and at 10am. Each Wednesday there is a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am (in the Parish Rooms). The collection at the Candlemas service raised £180 for The Children’s Society.

Village Pump: The over 50’s group meets in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Wednesday, 2-3.30pm. Visitors welcome.

History Group: Farnhill and Kildwick History Group will start its new programme of events with a meeting and illustrated talk on “Kildwick Hall and its owners’ to be given by Graham Taylor. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 21, at 7pm in the main hall on the ground floor of Kildwick and Farnhill Institute. It is free.

Coffee Morning: At the Farnhill Coffee Morning held on Saturday £95 was raised for Christian Links in Keighley Schools and £30 for the Gambia Schools Trust.

NSPCC Thanks: The Gargrave branch committee of the NSPCC would like to thank everyone for their support and attendance at the Soup Luncheon which was held in the Village Hall on Saturday. A total of £1,300 was raised for NSPCC funds. Special thanks to all those who helped on the day and the generous support by everyone which was much appreciated.

Village Hall: Electronic organist Elizabeth Harrison performs at Gargrave Village Hall on Friday evening from 8pm. Tickets are £5.00 on the door, bring along your own supper. The weekly coffee morning will be held on Saturday in the from 9.30am. There will be toasted teacakes and a selection of homemade cakes. There will also be a raffle and bookstall with proceeds for hall funds and an additional stall in aid of Manorlands.
