THREE recycling sites in West Craven are set to close.

Ten public recycling sites in Pendle, including ones at Barnoldswick, Earby and Salterforth, will close by the end of March as they are costing the borough council over £20,000 a year.

Council officers said the sites are becoming an eyesore due to persistent problems with the fly tipping of household and trade waste.

The three West Craven recycling sites set for closure are at Rainhall Road in Barnoldswick, Boot Street car park in Earby, the Anchor Inn at Salterforth.

The Rainhall Road car park recycling site has long been an eyesore, and in November 2015 one Barnoldswick councillor described it as a "grot spot".

"It's a grot spot," Cllr David Whipp said at the time. "The recycling site is having persistent problems with fly-tipping, including drums of oil.

"There is casual litter strewn at the site and the cardboard skips are overflowing. It's become so regular, it's a big problem.

"Maybe it should be taken away and people can use the kerbside collection or the Lancashire County Council's household waste site instead. We'll have to monitor it, as we may have to move forward with an eviction notice if it isn't sorted."

Apart from the three in West Craven, the other seven sites set for closure are at Asda in Colne, the Red Lion pub in Colne, Goitside car park in Nelson, Morrisons in Nelson, Barley picnic site, the Rising Sun pub in Blacko an the Sparrowhawk pub in Fence.

David Walker, Pendle Council’s environmental services manager, said: “Residents are able to recycle up to six types of material via the fortnightly kerbside collections from their homes.”

There are also household waste and recycling centres on West Close Road, Barnoldswick, and at Heasanford Industrial Estate, Burnley.

Carole Taylor, Pendle Council’s waste and recycling officer, added: “We also offer a good, convenient service to businesses in Pendle, collecting waste and recycling direct from their premises.”
