SIGN language will be in the hands of babes thanks to new classes at Glusburn Institute.

The community and arts centre plans to host ‘Toddle Up and Sign’ classes for babies with a free taster session running on Saturday, March 4.

The 10am class, taught by experienced sign language practitioner Liz Deakin, is aimed at babies aged from six months up to toddlers.

It uses British Sign Language alongside nursery rhymes, songs and stories to teach babies and toddlers an additional form of communication.

Liz said Baby Sign Language focused on enhancing communication between parents and babies by teaching babies simple signs they could use before they could talk.

She said babies understood language and use gestures earlier than they could speak, and had the ability to learn simple signs to let parents know when they were hungry, hot, cold, were poorly, wanted their teddy bear.

Liz said: “The sessions focus on a new topic each week, for example bath and bedtime routines to exploring signs for sea animals, food, transport and colours.

“They involve lots of interactive elements to keep little ones entertained and help associate Signs to words. The use of well-known songs and rhymes allow parents to easily remember the signs taught, plus they make the classes lots of fun.”

Liz has worked in the Deaf Community for more than 10 years and has gained a Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language.

She has run sessions in Guiseley for the past year and has been surprised at the level of interest.

She added: “When I had my son I was amazed at how easily he picked up simple signs such as ‘More’, ‘Please’, ‘Milk’. Even at two he still uses sign language alongside his speech, and loves attending Baby Sign classes.

“It was a proud moment the first time he interacted with me through sign language when I was singing his favourite rhymes.

“Being able to communicate more effectively with your baby can help reduce that awful frustration you both can feel when you are unable to determine the cause of their upset. A happy baby means a happy family!”

If the taster session is successful, subsequent classes will run in six-week blocks so little ones become comfortable in the group setting. There will be a chance for parents to have a cuppa and a chat.
