FRIENDS of Skipton's Aireville Park are hoping for a large turnout on Saturday (March 4) for the park's annual spring clean.

And this year, the friends group will be taking part in the national Great British Spring Clean, which aims to get half a million people across the country to get out and tidy up their environment.

Sharon Jefferies, vice chairman of the Friends of Aireville Park, said they hoped as many people as possible would come along on Saturday and clear the park of litter.

"This a great chance to get together with neighbours and friends to join an increasing number of people who have had enough of other people’s litter, are willing to volunteer their time to help clear up and improve our local environment," she said.

At last year's spring clean, volunteers collected 17 bags of rubbish, and more than 4kg of dog faeces, left behind by irresponsible pet owners.

"It was amazing to see the impact we made in just one morning. I’m sure we can do it again and we’d love people to join us," she said.

All those turning up on Saturday, will be provided with litter pickers and bags, but should bring their own gloves.

Group chairman, Fiona Protheroe, said: "We're always looking for volunteers to come and help - the more people that can come along the better. It was great to see some new faces last year as well as regular volunteers, we really appreciate their hard work and community spirit.”

Saturday's clean up will take place from 10.30am, with people meeting in the park, near the band stand and opposite the skate park.

There will be a meeting of the Friends of Aireville Park on Thursday, March 16 at 7.30pm at Herriots Hotel, Skipton. More details on the group's Facebook page.
