Please find attached a report and pictures from our Annual Show & Sale of Individual Breeding Sheep which was held on Tuesday 21st  February, we would very much appreciate the inclusion of both the press release and photos within your next publication, this sale saw two new records – the highest price ever paid for a Herdwick female (Breed Record) and the highest price for a Swaledale female at Bentham Auction (Mart record).

The Annual Multi- Breed show & sale of Individual Breeding Sheep held at Bentham Auction returned buoyant prices in all sections:

Herdwick: -A breed record price of £1000 for a Herdwick female was paid by A&M Brennand of Chapel le Dale for the Champion In Lamb Ewe judged by Chris Hartley of Millom. The tremendous ewe with all the breed attributes was bred & shown by Arnold Lancaster (Brackenbarrow), sire by a Mark Potter (Ulcatrow) Ram, Dam sire being Brackenbarrow Simply & In Lamb to a James Reebank (Raceyghyll) Ram, the full brother of Raceyghyll £5500 Ram sold 2016 to Anthony Hartley. Other leading prices included D&J Wilson, Dockray – Gimmer Hogg £380; IK&AM Grisedale, Milton – Gimmer Hogg £320; AD Harrison, Brotherikeld  - 1 Crop ewe £300 & RA Lancaster, Coniston – 1 Crop Ewe at £300.

Swaledales:- A Market record price of £3000 for a Swaledale sheep was achieved by David and Robin Booth of Feizor with their 2 Crop ewe sire by Bull & Cave C37567 scanned for twins in lamb to a Patrick Sowerby, Oakbank Ram C40333. The ewe sold to Messrs Lightfoot of Glenridding and stood 2nd to the Champion Swaledale ewe the choice of judge Mark Graham of Whitby which later looked good value when sold to Owlands Farms of Richmond for £600.

Blue Faced Leicesters:- George Whitwell of Lanshaw judged the show classes awarding Champion Rosette to Robin & David Booth’s Gimmer hogg sired by Highberries HO14 selling for £1200 to Willy Linton of Abington. The Booths also sold their 3rd prize hogg for £1600 to K&HA Ridley of Consett. The 2nd prize hoggs from Gordon Rawsthorne & Grandson James sold for £800 to David Lawson’s Gragareth flock with the same breeders topping the breed with a gimmer hogg sired by F003 Hundith (Dam Sire B001 Highberries) selling for £1700 to M Thomlinson of Derbyshire.

Dalesbred:- Judged by Frank Brennand who awarded the Champion prize to MJ&A Carr of Brackenbottom for their Gimmer Hogg selling to T Hall for £650. Whilst 1st prize gimmer hogg for Richard Close of Starbotton sold to H Challis of Middlesmoor for £520.

Teeswaters:- Judged by Mark Elliot of Whitby whose choice of Champion from D&GC Newbould of Dallowgill sold to a top of £300 to the judge.

Auctioneer Stephen Dennis reported that Quality Sheep in all sections were well sought after with sheep selling to Irish & Scottish buyers and a large North of England contingent.
