GOOD neighbours were rewarded at a Skipton estate's first ever community champion awards.

The new Greatwood and Horse Close Community Awards recognised families, individuals and groups who have made life better for the whole community.

Held at Greatwood Primary School, it was organised by the Greatwood and Horseclose Residents' Association, the estate committee and Yorkshire Housing.

It included a buffet by the estate's own award winning Scoff Cafe and was attended by Skipton Mayor, Cllr Martin Emmerson, who also presented each winner with a certificate, trophy and £20 voucher.

Cllr Emmerson paid tribute to all those who had been nominated for an award, and to the eventual winners.

"They are a wonderful example of the great things achieved in the Greatwood and Horseclose community. In my view it’s a community well worth celebrating," he said.

And Yorkshire Housing’s community development advisor Karen McIntyre said it was a wonderful start to what would be an annual celebration of a great community.

“We’re already looking forward to next year and seeing what exciting developments will happen in the next 12 months in Greatwood and Horseclose," she said.

Scoff café chef, and chairman of the residents association, Ray Marfell said it was the first time the cafe had carried out the catering for an external event.

"To come so far in just under two years is a fine testament to the hard work that has gone into Scoff. It’s an honour to serve this wonderful community. The support we have had is fantastic," he said.

Award winners: Sean Graham, volunteering;

Peggy Harroway, good neighbour; Sarah Tipling, overcoming adversity; Megan Elgie, special effort; The Greatwood Primary School’s ‘Playmaker’ leadership group, Under 11 Young Achiever; Conor McGinty, Over 11 Young Achiever.
