THE work of an Addingham-based photographer has been shortlisted by the judges of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards.

Barry Tweed-Rycroft's image Upside Downtown Phoenix has been placed in the top ten in the awards’ Open Architectural category. Over 227,000 images from 183 countries were submitted to the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards. In the Open competition, judges were looking for the best single images across ten categories, representing the finest contemporary photography today.

Barry's photograph was taken on January 27, 2016 while staying in the downtown area of Phoenix Arizona. It was soon after sunrise and the sun's rich reflection in a puddle caught his eye along with the dissecting lines in the concrete and tyre marks trailing off into the street.

Barry started his working life as a black and white printer, going on to own his own photography business in Otley, for four years. Moving on to work within sales management within the building industry he maintained his interest in photography. Now a semi professional photographer he works freelance for an agency which provides photographers for estate agents, whilst also pursuing his passion for faces, landscape, and abandoned building photography.

Barry said: "I am delighted at being recognised by the Sony World Photography Awards. I am excited to see what opportunities being shortlisted will present and to see my work being exhibited in London.”

Barry will now compete to win the Open architectural category and the latest Sony digital imagery equipment. All ten Open category winners will be announced on March 28. From the category winners, the Open Photographer of the Year and recipient of the $5,000 cash prize will be revealed on April 20.

The photographer’s work will also be shown alongside the awards’ other shortlisted and winning images at the Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition in London from April 21-May 7.
