A CAMPAIGN launched three years ago by mums has landed a £5,000 windfall towards restoring a run-down village playground .

The cash for Gargrave Playground Association has come from the community fund set up by North Yorkshire's Police Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan.

It will go towards the £100,000 the association members estimate it will cost to renew equipment, create a planting area with a mix of sensory flowers, grasses and bushes, and a picnic area.

She said: “I’ve been really impressed with this ambitious plan and the support the playground receives from the local community."

Mother of two, Sarah Mawson, said:"We want to thank Julia Mulligan for this fantastic opportunity. We are so excited to see everyone’s hard work being completed and getting our new playground in. Works for phase one will be starting during the Spring."

The £5000 would be spent on the double perch and swings, which meets the needs of age groups from junior to teenage years.

"It has been agreed that there is a general lack of provision for families and young people and the Parish council recognises and supports the need to create somewhere for everyone to meet and play safely.

Recent contributors to their fund are village-based Indian restaurant Bollywood and the Co-op store, which join other supporters, including the Coulthurst Trust, The Craven Trust and Yorventure .

Also on board are Craven CVS and JN Bentley, of Skipton, which has helped complete a drainage survey of the playground, together with Skipton Building Society, Gargrave School, Gargrave resident Jim Simpson and Skipton Rotary Club.
