RAIL passengers were again facing disruption today as workers took to the picket line at Skipton station on their third day of action in recent weeks in a bid to stop Northern Rail introducing driver only operated trains.

Northern Rail  said it is running 40% of its usual services today and warned that those services that are not cancelled will be busier than usual. Passengers are advised to leave extra time to travel.

Pickets at the station today displayed a flag with the words "This strike is all about safety" they handed out leaflets and badges to passengers arriving and departing the station.

The RMT has warned that axing guards would lead to a surge in crime and anti-social behaviour on trains and make journeys less safe for passengers.

A union spokesman said: "This is not about wages but about protecting the safety of passengers. There is no way drivers can do the job of conductors at the same time. We have had a fantastic response from the public who have generally shown great support."

Northern Rail has said previously that it's modernisation scheme is at early stages, and urged the RMT to continue talks.
