Domino Drive: At the domino drive on Monday April 10 there was a good number of players with eight tables played. A pie and pea supper was provided and a raffle took place. £98 was raised for Institute funds. Thanks go to Muriel and Christina for arranging the event. The annual Duck Race on Easter Saturday was once again a huge success and great fun. At least 60 people ventured out in the cold to watch 200 plastic ducks ‘swim’ down Hebden Beck. The winning numbers were, 1st 26 Liza Roberts and Graeme Ogden, 2nd 105 Jim Martin and Isaac Hastings, 3rd 66 Karen Aspinall and Tom Martin, 4th 139 Michael Field, 5th 121 Mr Simpson, 6th 159 Carol Parkinson. This year a special prize was kindly donated by the ‘Made with Hope’ Charity (www.madewithhope.org) for the duck which was in last place. Duck 32, won by Jacqui Oversby and Beth Adams. A grand total of £255 was made for Institute funds. Thank you for your support and to the Naylor Family for organising the event. The Easter Monday Coffee Morning and Lunch raised money to be divided between the Institute and the East Africa Famine Appeal. £256.24 was made. Thank you to Christina and members of the village who helped on the day.

Gala Queen: There will be a family disco at the Social Club on Saturday from 7.30pm. This year’s Gala Queen will be chosen from entrants between ages 10-17. Attendants will also be chosen from boys and girls between the ages of 5-9. Entrants can be submitted on the night, and the candidates will be chosen during the evening. All entrants for Queen and attendants must reside in the parish. All welcome.

Parish Council: The annual Parish Council meeting will be held on May 11 in the Institute at 7pm. This will be followed by the Parish Council timetabled meeting at 7.30pm.

Coffee Morning: The Coffee Morning in the Institute on Saturday will be a St Aidan’s Fundraiser. All welcome, from 10am. Stalls, raffle etc.

Gun Club: Members of Penyghent Gun Club met in Horton Quarry by kind invitation of Hansons to take part in a 25 bird down-the-line shoot. S Bamber was the field marshall and the winner of the competition. K Humphrey was second and in joint third position were L Bolton and G Bowers. The members returned to the same venue for a second shoot and again S Bamber took on the marshall’s role. L Bolton was in first position, S Bamber in second and third was J Broadhead. Jane Bolton and S Bamber tied on equal points in the pool shoot and after a shoot off S Bamber was the winner. The next event is a team shoot against Arncliffe in Horton Quarry on May 14 at 5pm.

St Oswald’s: The congregation and friends of St Oswald’s church would like to invite everyone to join them for a parish ramble and picnic on Saturday. The fundraising event is for any age group and families in particular are welcome. The route of the walk begins at Selside and takes in part of the Pennine bridleway and the Ribble Way to High Birkwith Farm, where a picnic lunch can be enjoyed. The second half of the walk is to Nether Lodge and Cam Beck returning via Low Birkwith and back to Selside. All or part of the route can be walked or alternately just join the ramblers group for the picnic lunch. Community Association: At the April meeting of the Ingleton Rural Community Association (IRCA) Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), it was reported that the swimming pool had been emptied and cleaned and all the work is on schedule ready for the opening on Saturday 27 May at 10am. Jennifer Thistlethwaite had attended the presentation of a donation from the Ingleton Co-op Community Fund of £1,766 to the IRCA CIO. This money is to be used on new kitchen equipment at the centre and towards the Splash Park project. Plans for the Gala on July 15 are progressing well. Easter Bingo raised £500 being raised for Centre funds. The NSPCC is to have an Open Gardens event later in the year. A fundraising jumble sale will be held on Saturday for the 1940s weekend, which is later in the year. They plan to have a fairground for children in the village and a free event at the school on the Friday. The Old People’s Welfare summer outing will be on Thursday August 17 to the Lake District with food at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal. Their jumble sale is on May 27. After 20 years dedicated service to the Edward Bear club at St Mary’s Church, Doreen Collingham and Viv Webber have decided to retire. At a recent parish meeting they were presented with bouquets of flowers and framed handprints of the children who had attended. The club will continue and will be run by the Rev Nick Trenholme, his wife Claire and Montserrat on alternate Monday afternoons in the church room. More members will be welcome. The final re-sited plans for the Splash Park are now ready for re-submission to the council. Donations received £500 from Howson’s, £100 from Ingleborough WI and a generous donation from Pat and John Mollitt to provide a special water feature in memory of Aaron. The panto jumble sale raised £577, their annual meeting is on May 18. The Scouts had a good St George’s Day parade organised by the district Explorers. Their jumble sale is on June 3.

The library is now being run by volunteers and the first event was a children’s craft session and egg rolling. B4RN is now live at the centre and the TIC. The winner of £20 in the 200 Club was Alan Ideson, second with £10 was Jean Lewis and Harry Garmin, Marilyn Shaw and Andrew Huck each won £5.

Long Preston

Women’s Institute: The May meeting of Long Preston WI takes place in the village hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm when president Jacquie Morley will host a ‘hands on’ evening. The competition will be a small hand-made item. New members welcome.

Lothersdale

Over 60s: Thirty members and guests met in the village hall to hear Ian Dewhirst, a retired librarian and notable historian from Keighley, give an amusing and enlightening talk about ‘messages on postcards’. Mary Rushton gave a vote of thanks to the speaker. Gemma Harling, the prospective candidate for Aire Valley and Lothersdale in the forthcoming election attended the meeting and gave a short talk to introduce herself to the members. Arrangements are being made for the trip to White Coppice Rose Gardens at Chorley on July 5. The cost will be £12 for members and £16 for guests, to include coach travel, a tour of the gardens, afternoon tea and an organ recital. The next meeting is Wednesday when the entertainment will be provided by the Clitheroe Ukulele Orchestra. New members and guests are always welcome.

Railway Walks: There are two guided walks on Saturday. The first is from Dent to Kirkby Lonsdale and is a 12-mile strenuous walk leaving Dent at 10.16am and returning to Settle. This will make use of a service bus to Dent Village and again from Kirkby Lonsdale to Settle. Due to the use of buses and the limited bus capacity it is necessary to reserve a place on this walk by contacting 01729 824305. The second walk is a Kirkby Stephen circular via Lockthwaite and is an 11-mile moderately strenuous walk leaving Kirkby Stephen at 10.34am. All participants are reminded that it is their responsibility to make sure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear.

Aid Week: Christian Aid week runs May 14-20 and there will be a house to house collection throughout the week in Settle and the surrounding villages. In addition to this there will be coffee evening in St John’s Church Hall on Wednesday, May 17, 7-.30pmincluding a bring and buy, plant and home-made cakes stalls. Take donations for the stalls on the evening of the event.
