RESIDENTS are being reminded to make sure they are able to vote as Craven District Council’s Returning Officer received official notification of the general election this week.

The parliamentary writ was hand delivered to Paul Shevlin, the council’s chief executive, by Royal Mail on Thursday, May 4.

The writ is issued, after the dissolution of Parliament, by the Clerk of the Crown to each constituency calling for a general election to take place.

The deadline to register to vote in the election is Monday, May 22, with the general election taking place on June 8.

Mr Shevlin said: “This writ marks the formal start of the general election process and it’s important that everyone has the opportunity to have their say.

Electors can register online quickly and easily at www.gov.uk/registertovote - haver a National Insurance number handy.

The Parliamentary count for the Skipton and Ripon constituency will take place overnight on June 8 in Skipton Town Hall, with a result expected to be declared around 3am on the morning of Friday June 9.
