Parish Council: The annual meeting of the parish council is on Monday 15th May 2017 at 8pm in Austwick Parish Hall. This meeting is immediately followed by the ordinary meeting of the council. Time is given at the start of the meeting for electors to ask questions or make statements that relate to the work of the council. The notice and agenda for both meetings is posted on the parish notice boards and on the parish council website.

Bowling Club: Austwick Bowling Club held the first club competition of the season on May Bank Holiday Monday, for the Bill Smith Trophy. It was won by Ann Smale, runner-up was Peter Morton. On Saturday there was a friendly match against Hornby, lost 7-2. The next match is home to Bentham on Saturday at 1.30pm.

Church News: On Saturday there is a memorial service for John Peter Farrer at 1pm in Clapham Church. Sunday, 09.30am, morning prayer at Austwick; 11am Holy Communion at Clapham; 2pm Holy Communion at Keasden; 6.30pm Holy Communion at Austwick. Holy Communion will be held in the vicarage every Wednesday morning at 10.30am during May.

St Andrew’s: The toddler’s group will meet at 9.30am tomorrow and the Bible study group will then meet at 7.30pm at Woodlands. The Rev David Edmondson will lead the 10.30am Communion service on Sunday and at 6.30pm there will be a Now praise service. The prayer hour will be held at 10am on Monday. A Christian Aid Big Breakfast will take place from 9am to 11am on Wednesday. Village Show: The 37th Bolton Abbey Village show will be held in Bolton Abbey Village Hall on Saturday at 2 pm. Children can be creative with materials supplied at the show and the winner of this class will be chosen by the Rev Jonathan Cain, who will also present the prizes at 3pm. The picture chosen for the 2017 show poster was painted by Oliver James Mann.

Gala Day: The event will take place on Saturday, June 3, with the procession at 1pm followed by traditional fun and games on the rec. Village Hub: Carleton Village Hub and Coffee Shop is now open daily, every morning, 8.30am-noon. The Hub is a coffee shop, meeting place, internet café, and book exchange. The venue offers a space for small meetings, caters for cyclists and walkers visiting or passing through the village, or just a place to pop in and read the paper with a cup of coffee and a bacon sandwich. Art Group: Clapham Art Group is holding its 66th Annual Art Exhibition beginning with an open preview evening on Friday, May 26, in Clapham Village Hall, open to everyone. Young Farmers: Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at Rookery Farm, Winterburn, by kind permission of the Smith Family. Members judged dairy heifers and breeding mules for the outdoor classes, and eggs and hats for the indoor classes. The judges for the evening were Paul and Janet Bolland of Dykelands Farm, Airton. Art Exhibition: Cononley Art Group’s late Spring Exhibition is on May 27-29 at

Cononley Village Institute, the three days of the Bank Holiday Weekend.There will be the usual children’s corner, raffle and painting demonstrations, as well as pictures and cards to view and buy. Doors open 10am-4 pm. A variety of refreshments will be available each day and entry is free.

Scarecrow Festival: This year’s festival featured 63 scarecrows, two duck races, fine weather and enthusiastic crowds, and raised almost £2,000 for the continuing development of the village institute. Thanks go to the scarecrow builders, to the people who helped on and before the day and to all the folk who came out to support the event. People were able to see the new wood front doors, one of the latest improvements to the building.

Jaywalkers Play: An audience of over 50 people enjoyed the Jaywalkers’ latest production ‘No Job For A Woman’. Another play written by director of the group Jay Cundell-Walker, it told the moving story of a woman reflecting back to her youth in the First World War. Cowling

New-2-U: Five volunteers maintain the New-2-U community charity initiative at St Andrew’s each Tuesday and Thursday, from 2pm to 4pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to noon. There is also a knit and natter session on Thursdays and currently the group is involved in various projects for both at home and abroad. The venture has expanded over the past four years and more helpers are now needed for regular or occasional sessions. Jobs include sorting, bagging, pricing, displaying and selling. The duty volunteer will be pleased to show anyone interested what is required. Special focus last month was on babies’ and children’s clothes, with more than 500 items for sale, and the display is being retained throughout this month with the inclusion of toys. Jigsaws are also being added.

Cowling Companions are staging their annual coffee morning at the village hall from 10am to noon on Saturday. There will be a raffle, tombola and produce tables. Admission is £1.50, including tea/coffee and scones.Yearly subs of £6 are now due and can be paid at the event. The group is having just two coach outings this year. The first is to Southport on June 27. The cost is £13.50 for members and £15.50 for non-members. The coach is only a 29-seater so people wishing to go are advised to book early. Parish Council: At the May meeting of Ingleton Parish Council, members agreed that a notice advertising the public WCs cleaning contract should be placed on the noticeboard to ensure that the tender process for this contract was as fair and open as possible. Cllr Ward informed members that Ingleton had now lost the market, mainly due to parking problems in the Square. The Clerk reported that the street light connection on Bentham Road had been delayed due to a technical difficulty and the light in the Square was waiting for a part. Cllr Lis reported that the boiler in the Community Centre was not working and needed replacing and several quotes were being obtained. Councillors heard that the new waste collection arrangements seemed mostly to be working well. However Cllr Lis voiced concerns on the mis-use of recycle banks involving contaminant waste from trade users and warned that if this continued the recycle bins were likely to be withdrawn.

On Saturday, May 20, there will be a school reunion for former pupils and staff at Ingleton Primary and Secondary Middle School, now the iCentre, Ingleton, from 10am-4pm. Fridays in term-time sees the resumption of ‘Smiley Faces’, or toddler praise at 1.45pm.
