A VISITOR from Scotland on his way through Ingleton was stopped by police because of his driving, heard Skipton magistrates.

Mark Smith, 45, a provisional licence holder driving a car without learner plates, was veering from side to side of the A65 heading towards Ingleton, the court heard.

He was taken to Harrogate Police Station because he appeared hyperactive and had enlarged pupils, the court was told.

At the station, he refused to carry out driver impairment tests, including walking up and down a straight line, standing on one leg and touching his nose. He further refused to take a preliminary drugs test the next morning.

Smith, who represented himself in court, said he has been visiting his family in Leeds, was not familiar with English law and had not understood what was being asked of him.

He further claimed a roadside alcohol test had been negative and that he had agreed to a preliminary drugs test after spending a night in custody which had also been negative.

Smith, of Weir Street, Greenock, Inverclyde, admitted two charges of failing to co operate with a preliminary test. His licence was endorsed with eight penalty points and he was fined £100 with costs of £85 and surcharge of £30.
