A KILNSEY visitor attraction is encouraging kids to go wild during the upcoming Spring Bank Holiday and half-term week.

Making the most of the woods, meadows, streams and trout fishing lakes, Kilnsey Park is running two School of the Wild events to re-connect families with the childhood pleasures of spending time in the great outdoors.

During Go Wild Week, which runs from Saturday, May 27, to Sunday, June 4, a host of supervised events are lined up for youngsters and the ‘kids at heart’ adults.

These activities include rummaging in the undergrowth searching for creepy crawlies, building dens, making mud pies, creating a tree spirit out of clay and catching fresh trout.

There will be a ten wild things trail to follow, nature-inspired craft activities and bread-making sessions.

Participants will also learn how to safely light a campfire without matches before sitting round re-living the day’s endeavours while enjoying toasted marshmallows.

For Go Wild Week, the activities run from 11am to 4pm. Entrance fee costs £3.50 for children (under 5s free) and £4.50 for adults.

Meanwhile a two-day School of the Wild holiday club (Thursday, June 1, and Friday, June 2) will see a Forest Schools trained instructor taking kids on a mini-adventure, showing them how sticks, fallen tree trunks, streams and undergrowth can become a fascinating playground.

Whether it is building a makeshift shelter, racing round an obstacle course or simply chilling out in a hammock, each day will offer a different array of activities for the youngsters.

The holiday club runs from 10am to 3pm for youngsters aged 7 to 13 and costs £25 per person per day.

While the children are running wild, parents can relax in Kilnsey’s Café by the Lake and enjoy the views.

Jamie Roberts, managing partner of Kilnsey Park, said: “We’re always hearing about how children spend too much time indoors. Here’s a fantastic chance for them to let off some steam outdoors and enjoy all the childhood classics in one day.

“Our School of the Wild events show how to respect the natural environment and play safely while gently bending the rules that tend to dominate normal life – for instance encouraging children to get muddy, walk on the grass and talk loudly.”
