THE bomb disposal unit was deployed to Barnoldswick on Saturday evening after part of a military shell was discovered.

Police spent hours searching the canal after a member of the public reported seeing the piece of munitions ordnance in the Long Ing Lane area.

The Royal Logistics Corps Bomb Disposal Unit was dispatched from Chester and it was identified as an inert tip from a first world war or second world war shell.

PC Nigel Keates said: "A piece of munitions ordnance was located yesterday evening by a member of the public and reported to police that it was in the canal off Long Ing Lane, Barnoldswick.

"Over a number of hours the North West Underwater Search Unit was brought in and the item located just off the canal bank.

"The Royal Logistics Corps Bomb Disposal Unit was dispatched from Chester and the item was identified as an inert tip from a World War I or early World War II shell and was disposed of.

"Thanks to the member of the public for reporting the item."

He added: "No matter what area you may cordon off there is always that scary moment as the local ducks decide to peck away."
